A recent study by the Australian Society of Orthodontists found that almost half (46%) of Australians would choose to ‘change’ the appearance of their teeth over any other facial feature.

Braces are the most popular and often necessary way to produce a perfect smile. However, braces have changed over the past decade and more options are now also available to correct imperfections. Orthodontists today have a greater variety of techniques and more sophisticated tools to enable them to deliver better results in a shorter timeframe than ever before.

Orthodontic treatment is one of the least invasive forms of cosmetic improvement available. If you have discoloured, slightly crooked, crowded or perhaps damaged teeth, there are many different ways to correct your smile without having to resort to traditional braces.

Tooth veneers – can be provided by your general dentist or specialist prosthodontist. They can be made of porcelain or composite resin, and the technique of placement is often referred to as Aesthetic Bonding. Veneers are a quick-fix solution for slight to moderately damaged or stained teeth that can be placed over your natural teeth to ensure a more uniform appearance. Sometimes tooth movements needs to be done prior to the veneers, and this is where an Orthodontist can help.

Aesthetic bonding uses a resin or ceramic material to replace worn or damaged enamel on the tooth. Tooth Veneers are a form of aesthetic bonding and are glued to the teeth either directly or indirectly after an impression is taken and fabrication is done by a dental technician. Aesthetic bonding is done to improve the shape, strength and appearance of the teeth. This treatment option can produce instant results too.

Tooth recontouring involves minor sanding of large or irregular teeth to achieve the appearance of better alignment and shape. In expert hands, great results can be achieved. This technique is often done during or after orthodontic tooth movement, and is often the “icing on the cake” of a beautiful smile. We at Whyte Orthodontics are very experienced and skilled at this technique.

Gum contouring is performed by a Periodontist who reshape the gum line using a laser or other surgical technique. This type of treatment works well in conjunction with minor tooth movement to improve teeth proportions and uniform appearance.

Although not suitable for everyone, these procedures are all effective and affordable measures that can produce attractive results.

Most people use braces to straighten their teeth for cosmetic purposes, however their primary purpose is actually to treat poor alignment and protect you from other issues that can result. If your Orthodontist does recommend braces, there are choices available that are more discreet than traditional metal braces, including:

  • Ceramic braces – clear or tooth-coloured brackets and optional tooth-coloured wires to reduce visibility
  • Lingual braces – custom-made braces that are attached to the inside surfaces of your teeth, instead of the front making them completely hidden
  • Removable retainers – including Invisalign – clear removable plastic aligners that provide an alternative to fixed braces for less severe orthodontic problems

If you are considering how best to improve your smile, discuss which treatment is right for you with your Orthodontist.
